History of Perth Tennis Club
The Perth Tennis Club was founded in 1894 by a group of local residents, establishing a small playing area on a leased block of land. Early courts were basic and hand-prepared after land was cleared.
By the early 1910s, the club had constructed several grass courts and a simple pavilion. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, it became a regular meeting place for social matches, where small-scale local tournaments were held.
Between the 1950s and 1980s, the club modernised its facilities. Grass courts were replaced with hard courts better suited to the climate, and a junior coaching program was started. In the late 1980s, floodlights were installed, enabling late evening competitions which lead to a sharp increase in membership numbers.
In the 2000s, the club expanded to five courts and upgraded its clubhouse. It introduced a range of programs including beginner sessions, doubles competitions, and junior squads. In 2014, the club held a 120th anniversary event.
Today the Perth Tennis Club is presented as a long-standing community sports venue with modern facilities, steady membership, and a focus on recreational and developmental tennis.
