Modern outdoor tennis, originally known as lawn tennis, was created in 1873 by British Army officer Major Walter Clopton Wingfield, who patented a version of the game played on grass courts with standardized equipment. The sport quickly spread across Britain and to the United States and Australia.

The first major tournaments appeared soon after. Wimbledon began in 1877, becoming the oldest tennis championship, followed by the U.S. Championships in 1881, the French Championships in 1891, and the Australian Championships in 1905. These four events later became known as the Grand Slam tournaments.

Tennis became an Olympic sport in 1896, was removed after 1924 due to disputes over amateurism, and was reinstated in 1988 as a full medal sport. Professional tennis expanded rapidly in the 20th century, especially after the Open Era began in 1968, allowing amateurs and professionals to compete together.

Today, tennis is a global sport played on multiple surfaces including grass, clay, and hard courts with organised professional tournaments for men and women, extensive junior and recreational participation, and widespread international viewership.
